After five years together, they recently chose their wedding date; just two days before their engagement session! With their wedding taking place in New Mexico, this session at Winterthur Museum & Gardens in Wilmington, Delaware was the perfect way to celebrate this exciting season of life before they begin their next chapter together.
A Fairytale Setting at Winterthur
It’s easy to understand why Winterthur is one of my favorite engagement session locations in Delaware. The historic mansion, sweeping staircases, romantic gardens, hidden pathways, and reflecting pool create endless opportunities for beautiful photographs. Every turn feels like discovering another secret garden, making each gallery unique.

Love That Speaks Without Words
What stood out most about James and Elisa wasn’t where we were; it was how naturally they loved each other.
Some couples need a little time to warm up in front of the camera. These two simply needed each other.
Every laugh felt genuine. Every glance felt effortless. James had a quiet, steady way of looking at Elisa that immediately made me think, “That’s her safe place.” She could simply be herself around him, and that comfort showed in every photograph we created together.
One of my favorite moments happened during a prompt where James wrapped Elisa in a bear hug from behind and whispered the name of a food into her ear. Neither of them were looking at the camera. Elisa burst into laughter while James tucked his face close to hers, completely caught up in the moment. Those are the kinds of images I treasure most. Not because they’re perfectly posed, but because they preserve a feeling.
The Hottest Day in Delaware… and They Never Stopped Smiling
To say it was hot would be an understatement.
Their session took place during one of the hottest, most humid days Delaware had seen all summer. Even so, James and Elisa never let the weather steal their joy. They laughed through every prompt, embraced every location, and made the entire evening so much fun.
At the beginning of the session, Elisa’s sisters and children joined us for a little while, and I immediately noticed how important family is to them. It added another layer of sweetness to an already joyful evening and reminded me that engagement sessions are about celebrating the people who make life meaningful as much as they’re about the wedding.

Sessions like this are exactly why I love what I do.
There’s something incredibly special about photographing two people standing on the edge of a brand-new season together. The excitement, anticipation, and quiet moments in between become memories they’ll carry into their marriage for years to come.
My hope is that when James and Elisa look back at these photographs decades from now, they’ll see more than beautiful images. I hope they’ll remember exactly how this season felt. The excitement of finally setting a wedding date, the laughter they shared despite the summer heat, and a younger reflection of a love that has only continued to grow.
